The People Behind the Mood Meter
The Mood Meter app was conceived by Marc Brackett, Ph.D. and Robin Stern, Ph.D. from the Yale Center for Emotional Intelligence. The app was developed in partnership with HopeLab, Chairun Siregar (designer), and Reliable Coders (developers).
Marc Brackett, Ph.D., is founding director of the Yale Center for Emotional Intelligence and Professor in the Child Study Center at Yale University. His research focuses on: (1) the role of emotions in learning, decision making, relationship quality, and mental health; (2) the measurement of emotional intelligence (EI); (3) best practices for teaching EI; and (4) the influences of EI training on student and educator effectiveness, creativity, bullying prevention, and both school and workplace climate. He has published 125 scholarly articles and is a distinguished scientist on the National Commission on Social, Emotional, and Academic Learning.
Marc is the lead developer of RULER (recognizing, understanding, labeling, expressing, and regulating emotion), an evidence-based approach to social and emotional learning that has been adopted by over 1,500 public, charter, and private pre-school to high schools across the United States and in other countries, including Australia, China, England, Italy, Mexico, and Spain. RULER has been shown to boost academic performance, decrease school problems like bullying, enrich classroom climates, reduce teacher stress and burnout, and enhance teacher instructional practices. He regularly consults with large companies, including Facebook and Google on best practices for integrating the principles of emotion science into training and product design. Marc also holds a 5th degree black belt in Hapkido, a Korean martial art.
Robin Stern, Ph.D., is Associate Director for the Yale Center for Emotional Intelligence. She is a licensed psychoanalyst, educator, and author, with over twenty-five years of experience treating individuals, couples, and groups. Dr. Stern holds a doctorate in applied psychology from New York University and a postdoctoral certificate in psychoanalytic group psychotherapy from the Postgraduate Center for Mental Health. She is on the faculty of the Summer Principal’s Academy that is part of Teacher’s College, Columbia University, where she is currently co-teaching a class on emotional intelligence for leaders. Dr. Stern is co-developer of RULER.
In collaboration with Facebook and Dr. Brackett she created a reporting process for cyberbullying incidents and a help center for bullied children. Dr. Stern consults regularly with corporations, is the author of three books, including, most recently, Project Rebirth, and has co-authored numerous scholarly articles on emotional intelligence, gratitude, and the links between technology and emotions.
